Summary Romeo & Juliet - Act III


Scene I

Benvolio suggests Mercutio to go somewhere else so a fight doesn’t break out when they bump into the Capulets. It is too late. Tybalt just wanted a little word with the men but Mercutio started to provoke Tybalt. But Tybalt didn’t care and called Romeo a villain. Mercutio was getting angry. He tells Romeo to draw his sword but he refuses, Mercutio went alone without him and was fighting with Tybalt. Romeo didn’t want this fight to happen so he went between the two. Tybalt got under Romeo's arm and stabbed Mercutio and dies. Romeo got angry and fought Tybalt and killed him. Benvolio tells
Romeo to run before the Prince and citizens come. Lady Capulet (Tybalts aunt) yelled in tears that he is lying to protect the Montagues. She demands for Romeo's life.

Scene II

Juliet starts off by talking about Romeo. She is talking in a soliloquy expressing her feelings about Romeo. Later on the nurse comes and delivers Juliet news that Romeo killed Tybalt. The nurse talks about how Tybalt was a good person and how Romeo is banished. But Juliet talks about how if Tybalt lived her "husband" would have died. The scene ends with the nurse promising Juliet that she will find Romeo for her so they can be together.

Scene III

Friar Lawrence tells Romeo that his punishment for killing Tybalt is banishment not death. Romeo says he would rather die than not be with Juliet. When the nurse comes in and tells Romeo that Juliet is grieving Romeo attempted suicide. Friar tells Romeo that he can spend the night with Juliet but he needs to leave the in the morning because he’s banished. The Friar promises Romeo that Balthasar will tell him what happens in Verona and suggests that Romeo can expect when the Prince has time to think about it he will change his mind and allow him to return to Verona.

Scene IV

Lady Capulet and Paris walk together. They are talking together. Capulet says something because of past events. He has no time to ask her daughter about her feelings for Paris. Lady Capulet states that she will know her daughters thoughts in the morning. Paris is about to leave when Capulet says he thinks his daughter will listen to him, and then corrects himself and states that he is sure Juliet will accept by his decision. He tells Paris that the wedding will be held on Wednesday is to early and the wedding should be held on Thursday.

Scene V

After Romeo comes back to Montua to visit Juliet. They part after spending one night with each other. Lady Capulet tells Juliet how Romeo is evil for killing Tybalt and she will send others to kills him. While Juliet is still grieving for Romeo, Lady Capulet tells her how her days of joy should be back if she married Paris. Juliet said she would rather die but Capulet says he will force her into it. She asks the nurse for advise, but she supports Capulet. Juliet runs away and decides to go to the Friar’s cell for help.
