Summary Romeo & Juliet - Act IV

Scene I

Juliet and Paris finally meet each other, to arrange the marriage with Juliet at the Friar’s Cell. Juliet tries to prevent the marriage from happening by seeking the Friar’s said. Juliet is given a potion to drink from Friar Laurence to make her look as if she is dead. The Friar will make up a plan allowing Romeo to rescue Juliet from the tomb and take her to Mantua.

Scene II

Juliet is coming back home from her meeting with Friar Laurence. Juliet sees her father Capulet making wedding preparations. She pretends to agree to her father’s wished. Capulet is very happy that he moves up the wedding day.

Scene III

In her bedchamber, Juliet asks the Nurse to let her spend the night by herself and repeats the request to Lady Capulet. Alone, clutching the vial given to her by Friar Lawrence, she worries for a brief moment that it might be real poison. lf the Friar is untrustworthy and seeks merely to hide his role in her marriage to Romeo, she might die. She frightens herself with the imagery of what it will be like to awake surrounded by a bunch of dead bodies. She has a vision in which she sees Tybalt’s ghost searching for Romeo. She begs Tybalt's ghost to quit its search for Romeo, and toasting to Romeo, drinks the contents of the vial.

Scene IV

Lady Capulet and the Nurse walk in talking about the wedding then Capulet walks in and the Nurse tries to tell him to go and get some sleep but he refuses. Lady Capulet and the Nurse leave and Capulet call for some servants to set up more for the wedding. He thinks he hears Paris arrive so he calls the nurse and tells her to wake up Juliet to get ready for the wedding while he meets Paris.

Scene V

The Nurse attempts to wake up Juliet and realizes that she is dead. She calls Lady Capulet, and the two of them just start speaking of how much of a horrible day it is. Capulet comes into Juliet’s room to see if she's really dead, then he fills with sorrow, and says how he can hardly speak. Friar Laurence, Paris and the three musicians all arrive together and ask if the wedding is ready to start. Capulet tells them that
Juliet is dead. Friar Laurence tries to make them feel better by telling them that heaven has welcomed her, and suggests Juliet should be taken to the church for her funeral and burial. Everyone leave except for the musicians, who talk about what to do now that the wedding is cancelled. They really don’t care about making people feel better; they just want to make money.
